Gaming First Contact
Digital Gaming Industry Converges in Canada's High Tech Capital

Downtown Markham hosts Region’s First Gaming event

YORK REGION, GREATER TORONTO AREA, October 21, 2014 – In less than a month’s time, some of the most successful and thriving digital gaming and app developers in the nation will come together in the inaugural Gaming First Contact event.

This event, which takes place on Thursday, November 13 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Five Lamps Tavern in Unionville, Markham, will feature a panel of experts sharing their views of the ever changing digital gaming landscape, offering advice on how to navigate this complex and competitive space, and sharing stories of their successes.  Moderated by Marc Saltzman, a national authority on all things gaming, this event promises to be insightful and entertaining.

“I am thrilled to see a vibrant and growing gaming cluster and ecosystem just north of Toronto in York Region. The calibre of talent and range of solutions is incredible -- there are companies developing mobile games, virtual reality platforms as well as the embedded chips at the heart of some of the well-known console and virtual reality units,” says Marc Saltzman.

The Remington Group’s Downtown Markham partners with the City of Markham and York Region’s Economic Strategy Branch to make this event possible.  “We’re fortunate to have partners at all the right levels of government to make an event like this possible,” says Evelynn Ratcliffe, Retail Marketing for Downtown Markham. “Together we will challenge the outdated notion that great gaming companies only come from Silicon Valley.”

Downtown Markham, who hosts this event, is located at the centre of Markham Centre, in the City of Markham.  Markham, also known as Canada’s High Tech Capital was recently named as York University’s preferred expansion location. “We’re at the epicentre for innovation and digital development here in Markham, but much of the talent hidden here doesn’t even know it.  We’re aiming to change that with Gaming First Contact,” Ratcliffe adds.

In addition to developing a first rate urban experience complete with internationally successful businesses, Downtown Markham will also be home to nearly 15,000 residents, 2 million square feet of retail, 72 acres of natural and landscaped green spaces, and a world class art program including the world’s first power-producing, fine-art carousel.
