The latest phase for Remington Group's Downtown Markham project — including retail shops, restaurants and an eight-theatre cinema that can seat 2,400 — received approval from the town's development services committee last week.
"This begins to put some of the life in Markham Centre," Mayor Frank Scarpitti told media.
The commercial/retail phase of Downtown Markham, the largest LEED certified mixed-use development in North America, has already seen the completion of a condo building and more residential buildings are under construction.
The 8.8-acre property southeast of Birchmount Road and Enterprise Boulevard, extending southerly to Highway 407, includes about 0.6 acres to be turned into a public space.
Randy Pettigrew of the Remington Group told the committee they want to construct the buildings in the next year.
More details will be presented to council in the near future.
